166 Years of Theatre

Newcastle's Theatre Royal has just celebrated its 166th year. The birthday celebrations kicked off at 11am with coffee and a three-foot square birthday cake in the shape of the Theatre's famous columned frontage. The Theatre staff were joined by many of their supporters and partners from the worlds of arts, business, local government and journalists from around the region - as well as members from the cast of Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! which was at the Theatre all week.

At the birthday event Peter Sarah announced:

"We are proud to celebrate our 166th birthday and very grateful to the huge support we have from our audiences, Newcastle City Council, Corporate Members, Friends of the Theatre Royal and producers. We are very enthusiastic about our producing partnerships with local and national companies for this gives the Theatre Royal a creative role across the North East."

The celebrations continued with a recitation by North East favourite Trevor Fox, of a specially written prologue for the Theatre's birthday by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall. A happy co-incidence is that it was Matthew Bourne's famous production of Swan Lake that appeared at the end of Billy Elliot.

Immediately following the matinee of Nutcracker! the Theatre took advantage of the show's eighteen foot stage cake as a fitting backdrop for a photograph to commemorate the day, Peter Sarah and Matthew Bourne were joined on the technicolour set by the equally technicolour cast from the show, for a truly unique photograph.

The photograph - a very large file, I'm afraid!

Peter Sarah took the opportunity to announce some forthcoming shows:

  • Summer Holiday starring Stefan Booth (Jamie from Hollyoaks) and Christopher Biggins, opening on May Bank Holiday - Monday 5 May
  • The Blues Brothers, back by popular demand from Monday 30 June
  • My One and Only, transferring from the West End, for two weeks from Tuesday 29 July.

He also announced two important events for young people in Newcastle:

  • The National Theatre's Connections for youth drama groups will feature eight local groups performing specially written plays commissioned by the National Theatre. The Newcastle Connections event from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 March will be the first of ten similar events across the country
  • The second community project for young people is a Theatre Royal co-production with National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT), a new work for young performers called Such Sweet Thunder based on a musical score by Duke Ellington. This summer event for up to forty young people from around the region will also be in partnership with The Sage Gateshead. The Friends of the Theatre Royal have provided funds for three scholarships for successful members of the NYMT project.

The Vagina Monologues will play at the theatre for one week from 14th April and the cast will comprise Sorcha Cusack, Gwyneth Strong and Mina Anwar.

Every performance will donate a portion of ticket sales to the V-Day Fund, an organisation that provides charitable aid to women and girls who have been victims of abuse and violence. Since May 2001 the West End production of The Vagina Monologues has donated in excess of £70,000 to local charities.
