Theatres Will Close, Says Theatres Trust The Theatres Trust is the latest organisation to join in the attack on Arts Council England over its proposed cuts. These cuts will lead to theatre closures, the Trust said, and, in a statement isused today, Trust Director Mhora Samuel, warned that there were real risks that theatres across England could lie empty and areas could be left without their own theatre. Samuel called for Arts Council England to consider the impact that closures would have on local communities, and before coming to any final decisions, address the destabilising effect that these would have on audiences, theatre production and touring in the UK. Commenting on the theatres that are known to be campaigning against withdrawal of their funding, The Theatres Trust has conservatively estimated that over 5000 seats would be lost resulting in at least 400,000 less people able to attend theatre performances annually. "This would have a devastating impact on achieving the recommendations in Sir Brian McMasters report, Supporting Excellence in the Arts, released today", she said. "If theatres have to close, existing audiences will no longer have access to theatre, and aspirations to encourage wider and deeper engagement will be impossible when towns and cities have no venues or theatres where work, considered to be of strategic importance to the funding bodies, can be presented."
