The Bomb on Tour

In 1984, an IRA bomb was planted in the Grand Hotel, Brighton, killing five people and injuring dozens more. In 2000 Jo Berry, whose father was killed in the blast, met Patrick Magee - the man who planted the bomb - for the first time.

The Bomb is inspired by the events which led Jo Berry and Patrick Magee to meet and the impact these two extraordinary people had on each other and the worlds they inhabit. It is a story of how people seek to find peace in a place beyond hatred and retribution. When your way of life is threatened by violence, do you turn the other cheek or seek an eye for an eye?

The play was written following research including interviews with them and with other people connected to the subject matter. It depicts both real and imagined events and conversations through the central characters of Ned and Elizabeth.

In October 2006 The Bomb, which was written by Kevin Dyer was nominated for two TMA Awards for Best Actor (Paul Dodds) and Best Director (Joe Sumsion) and now it is to be revived at The Dukes, Lancaster before embarking on its second national tour.

Dyer is Associate Writer for Action Transport Theatre. He has had more than forty plays commissioned. His recent work includes a new version of Beauty and the Beast for The Dukes, The Monster Under The Bed for Polka, and The Fool on the Hill for Action Transport Theatre.

Joe Sumsion is the Director of The Dukes, Lancaster for whom he recently directed Beauty and the Beast in Williamson Park. Between 2001 and 2007 he

The was Artistic Director of Action Transport Theatre, commissioning and directing many plays including three co-productions with Vulavulani Theatre Company, South Africa. He has produced and directed for companies including M6 Theatre Company, The Dukes, Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal Stratford East.
