Theatre in the Museum

On the night of 9th February 1861 a storm hit the North-East coast of England, causing damage, destruction and death.

On the perilous rocks of Teesside's coastline, over sixty ships were wrecked and many lives lost, shocking communities which were used to the dangers of the sea.

It was also a time when Victorian England was building its prosperity on the labour of masses of migrating people who moved to where the work was, and also on the confidence, vision and opportunism of a bold few.

One such man, the entrepreneur Ralph Ward Jackson, set out to build a town - West Hartlepool - but on the night of the Great Storm he contemplates the gathering storm clouds over his own destiny as he listens to the warnings of a local fishwife …

Hartlepool's Museum of Hartlepool and Cleveland Theatre Company are collaborating for the first time on an exciting new drama about these momentous events called The Great Storm.

The museum itself will be the setting for the performances. Audiences will be invited to follow the unfolding events through different areas of the museum, where actors and artefacts will bring to life a fascinating period of our history.

The performances are free and take place on Wednesday 16th February at 1.30pm and Thursday 17th February at 11am and 1.30pm - just drop in.

The Great Storm is the first in a series of events being held by Hartlepool's Arts and Museums Service as part of the national SeaBritain celebrations to mark Britain's seafaring heritage.

The drama has been funded by Renaissance in the Regions - a groundbreaking initiative by museums, libraries and archives to transform regional museums and to enhance and increase people's appreciation of them. These performances are the pilot for a series of dramas which will tour museums in the Tees Valley over the next twelve months.
