Paines Plough and This Other England

Paines Plough is marking its thirtieth anniversary - and Vicky Featherstone's final season as artistic director - with This Other England.

Taking its cue from Melvyn Bragg’s radio 4 series The Routes of English Paines Plough commissioned eight outstanding voices of theatre to think about English as a language and how it shapes our identity. This season sees the premiere of the first four of these commissions which offer a theatrical cross-section of where we are now.

The season will be prersented at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark.

The Small Things
By Enda Walsh
Directed by Vicky Featherstone
Fri 28 Jan - Sun 27 Feb

Two houses, perched on top of mountains, stare at each other across a deep valley.

A man and a woman talk about the small things – parquet floor zigzagging down corridors, the memory of mother’s breasts, brown sauce and soggy chips. But these minutiae disguise a bigger story of brutality and unfaltering loyalty which emerges horrifically through the chit-chat.

Enda Walsh is one of the most innovative and thrilling playwrights of his generation following global success with his plays Disco Pigs and Bedbound. The Small Things is an exploration of language and our need for words to survive.
