The Thorn Birds - the Musical Colleen McCullough's 1977 romantic novel The Thorn Birds, made into a TV miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain, Barbara Stanwyck and Rachel Ward, is to become a stage musical. In the early nineties McCullough was sent three songs inspired by the book written by German composer and opera singer Gloria Bruni and the two women agreed to cooperate on a musical version. However they were unhappy with the script and so contacted Michael Bogdanov, artistic director of the Wales Theatre Company who was co-founder with Michael Pennington of the English Shakespeare company. Since then the three have worked together on the project. Bogdanov work-shopped this musical version two years ago in Berlin and the venture is a co-production between the Wales Theatre Company, TTB Gmbh of Hamburg, Gallissas of Berlin and the Arena Theatre Xanten. The only casting so far is Helen Anker as Meggie Cleary and the only other member of the creative team announced is David Emmanuel who is the costume designer. The production will premiere at the WTC's home, the Swansea Grand from 21st to 25th April (preview performances on 3rd and 4th) and performances are already confirmed at Aberystwyth Arts Centre from 28th April to 2nd May, Venue Cymru, Llandudno, from 5th to 9th May and the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, from 7th to 11th July.
Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
