Till Moves On It was announced today that Lawrence Till, artistic director of the Watford Palace Theatre since 1999, is leaving the theatre to pursue a freelance career. Lawrence has led the company through a period of change unparalleled in the venue's ninety-eight year history including playing a central role in the £8.8m two year refurbishment of the famous old theatre. He directed many notable productions for Watford Palace, including Translations, The Deep Blue Sea and Alfie, along with new plays by writers including Sarah Daniels, Diane Samuels, Charlotte Jones, Tanika Gupta, Sandi Toksvig and Dillie Keane, and much of this work has toured nationally. Speaking today, Till said, "I am proud of my achievements with new plays and the development of work with, and for, young people. However, the greatest achievement has to be the refurbishment of the building itself. I will look back on my time in Watford with pride; with admiration and excitement at the skills of the people I have worked with and wonder at the generosity of individuals and groups who contributed to its success. "I have been an Artistic Director for over fifteen years and I feel that it is now time to proceed towards a change". Peter McInerney Chairman of the Board of the Watford Palace Theatre commented, "The re-opening of the theatre would not have been possible without Lawrence's inspirational leadership and tenacious commitment. We wish him well" Prior to taking over the Palace, Till was artistic director of the Octagon, Bolton, for eight years. His first freelance production for Watford Palace Theatre will be One Last Card Trick, a new play by Stewart Permutt, opening on 2nd March.
