Tom Bell (1933 - 2006) Tom Bell, who died last Wednesday (4th October) after a short illness, was best known for his work in television, most recently as DS Bill Otley in Prime Suspect, for which he was BAFTA-nominated. Born in Liverpool, he was evacuated duruing the war to Morcambe and got a taste for acting at school. He trained at Bradford with Esme Church along with Robert Stephens and Billie Whitelaw and then worked in weekly rep in Ireland for the first part of his career. Later he moved to the Swansea Rep where he worked with then-newcomer Peter Gill.. He moved into film in the sixties and then into television, although he did continue to work in theatre, most noteably creating the role of Horst in Martin Sherman's Bent in 1979, alongside Ian McKellen. Other theatrical roles included Tom Stoppard's Travesties for the RSC. His television work includes Out, Chancer, Sons and Lovers, Waking the Dead, Taggart and Dalziel and Pascoe.
