Dateline: 3rd June, 2002 Bates and Duncan Win Tonys Lindsay Duncan last night added a Tony Best Actress Award to her Critics Circle and Olivier Awards for her performance in Private Lives, and Alan Bates also celebrated with a Best Actor award for Turgenev's Fortune's Fool. Private Lives won two other awards, Best Revival of a Play and Best Scenic Design (Tim Hatley), but the other British nominations fared less well, with Americans Shuler Hensley receiving Best Featured Performer in a Musical for the RNT Oklahoma! and Katie Finneran Best Featured Performer in a Play (for Noises Off). Nicholas Hytner's production of Sweet Smell of Success garnered one award, American John Lithgow winning Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Mamma Mia!, although nominated for numerous awards, gained none. The show, although popular with audiences, has not excited the Broadway critics.
