Dateline: 17th April, 2011
Trevor Bannister (1934 - 2011) Actor Trevor Bannister has died of a heart attack at the age of 74. Although best known for playing Mr Lucas in the long-runnning sitcom Are You Being Served? from 1972 - 1979 and for other TV appearances, he also had a long theatre career, beginning when he was 15 in rep in Folkestone. He made his West End debut in 1960 in Billy Liar with Albert Finney and continued working in theatres throughout his career. In fact, he left Are You Being Served? to do a national tour of a play, Middle Age Spread. This was a long tour and so he asked the BBC to change the filming day for the sitcom to Sunday so he could do both. They refused, so he left. In spite of that, he is best known for his TV work, which began in the 1968 television series The War of Darkie Pilbeam. This led to his appearance in Jack Rosenthals ITV sitcom The Dustbinmen (1969), with Bryan Pringle and Brian Wilde. Further TV appearances include The Saint, Coronation Street (in which he played three characters at various times), Keeping Up Appearances, The Avengers and finally Last of the Summer Wine. On stage he appeared often in farce - he was in an early West End run of Move Over, Mrs Markham - and 35 pantos, in which he usually played the dame. He died in his allotment in Thames Ditton on 14th April.
