Ali Curran, the new director of the Tron

New Director at the Tron

Peter Lawson, Chairman of Glasgow’s Tron Theatre, has announced the appointment of Ali Curran as the theatre’s new Director.

An extremely experienced programmer and producer, Ali Curran has, since 2001, held the post of Director of the Peacock Theatre in Dublin, at the Abbey, Ireland’s National Theatre. Under Ms Curran’s guidance, the Peacock has been dedicated to the development and presentation of work by new writers as well as regularly finding ways to breathe fresh life into classic plays.

Previously (1997 to 2001), Ali Curran was Director of the Dublin Fringe Festival where she played a key role in the development of Europe’s fastest growing curated festival, establishing it as an essential part of the Irish and international arts scene. Other roles have seen her working to make music training available to disadvantaged young people in Dublin’s inner city and sitting on the boards of the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Cols Céim Dance Theatre and the Irish Theatre Magazine.

The appointment follows the departure of Neil Murray, under whose Directorship the Tron has established itself as one of the most exciting, innovative and artistically successful theatres in the country. He will shortly take up his position as Executive Director of the new National Theatre of Scotland.

Speaking of Ali Curran’s appointment Mr. Lawson said, “I am delighted that Ali has agreed to take up the position. The Tron is currently producing some of the best theatre work in Scotland and I am confident that this appointment will enable us to continue providing our audiences with programmes of quality and great interest.”

“This is the perfect next step for me, to move into such a well established and creative organisation,” Ms.Curran said. “The Tron has an excellent pedigree and a dynamic team which I’m excited to be a part of. Artistically, the Scottish theatre scene holds exciting possibilities for me, and personally I am looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself there.”

She will take up her new position in mid-May.
