Truro's Hall in Crisis Despite a successful year in which an estimated 893,500 visited the venue, including 177,500 people who bought a ticket to see a show, and a growth in ticket sales of 47% and in ticket income of 78%, Truro's Hall for Cornwall is facing a financial crisis, having a deficit of around £100,000. "As with all regional theatres, our finances are balanced on a knife edge. We do everything we can to earn additional money and make savings but there is a serious problem with the funding available. HfCs is considerably lower than similar theatres elsewhere in the country," said Tim Brinkman, the venue's director. In 2005/6 Hall for Cornwall received funding from three major stakeholders: Arts Council England, Cornwall County Council and Carrick District Council, totalling £253,000 for the year, only 50p per person in Cornwall. All stakeholders agree this is not enough. In 2000 Hall for Cornwall very nearly closed due to lack of funding. Arts Council England, Carrick District Council and Cornwall County Council came together to provide some financial support, with Objective One funds making up the total needed until 2005. "Because we recognised that Objective One support is time limited we have been working with stakeholders for several years to find the funding to plug the gap once it finished at the end of 2004. It is very frustrating that although everyone agrees on the higher levels required it has not been possible to find the money so far," Brinkman added. He said that selling more tickets or putting up ticket prices wont provide the answer because only a small part goes to the theatre. On average 79p of every £1 goes to the promoter. Now the venue is considering an increase in the 50p per ticket theatre development fund payment.
