UK Actor Missing as Theatres Raise Funds

Actor/singer Ross Baker, who plays Schlomo Metzenbaum in the touring production of Fame the Musical, is one of the 150 Britons missing after the Asian tsunami. He was on the island of Koh Phi Phi when the disatser happened and has not been seen or heard from since, although his brother and cousin have since travelled to Thailand to try to find him.

Meanwhile theatres throughout the country have been raising money. Among them the London Palladium, which currently houses Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, estimates that audiences have given on average £4,000 per performance and the Dominion will give all the proceeds for the 1,000th performance of We Will Rock You on 12th January will go to UNICEF's appeal.

Update: 8th January

It is now estimated that up to 440 Britons are officially missing or dead, and that there may be another 2,000 missing.

Among the dead is Charlie Smith, the grandson of actor Eric Richard (Bob Cryer in The Bill), who was just 59 days old. Richard Smith and his partner were on holiday with their three children when the tsunami struck. They pinned themselves to palm trees and Richard Smith managed to hold on to Charlie but they were hit by furniture, breeze blocks and other debris and the baby was killed by a blow from some of the debris. The rest of the family survived.
