A scene from The Nutcracker

Sponsor a Tutu!

Sponsor a tutu! That's the invitation being issued by Scottish Ballet.

In an effort to boost its cash flow, the company is asking fans to sponsor a costume for its Christmas production of The Nutcracker. "You can sponsor a whole character or sponsor an individual or a pair of gloves or a hat," a company spokesman said, and there is a wide range of sponsorship opportunities available.

A white and silver tutu, for example, costs £1,500, whereas a pair of tights is £15. Even a simple pair of pointe shoes costs £35 and the company estimates that, during the show's run (Glasgow Theatre Royal from 11th December, the Edinburgh Festival Theatre from 6th January and the Eden Court in Inverness from 19th January), they will use over 1,100 pairs.

The cost of other individual costumes runs into the hundreds.

"Every little bit helps, and it’s a way for people to feel part of the company," the spokesman added.

"Scottish Ballet's The Nutcracker features some of the most dazzling, seductive and colourful costumes seen by dance audiences in recent years.

"These costumes have to be extremely hard-wearing. The fabrics are specially chosen to have the correct weight and drape and have to be able to withstand the gruelling schedule of performances every Christmas season.

"Every character in the ballet needs ten costumes (one for each dancer performing the role) and every dancer needs their own individually fitted dance shoes."
