The End of Twisting Yarn?

Twisting Yarn, the theatre company for young people run by Bradford Alhambra's Education Department and previously funded by Bradford Council, has had its council funding removed and faces disbandment. This week its touring production of The Life of Pi plays its last date at Greenwich. For the moment its two permanent employees have not yet been given notice by Bradford Council and are looking for ways of continuing producing work, for which they already had outside funding, in the coming year.

The company not only produces touring productions but also does theatre in education work and runs youth theatre courses.

It had been hoped that local government elections might have brought a change of policy but they haven't. So not just Bradford, but the rest of the country to which its productions tour, are going to lose a valuable resource for the sake of £114,000 - a grant that includes the salaries of its two-person staff as well as all other costs.

The reaction of one 11-year old member of the audience, Thomas Ramsay, was to establish a website petition to be presented to Bradford council. Proof, if any is needed, of the impact this company has had and how much it is appreciated. To support this youngster, and the company, go to www.petitiononline.com/STY/petition.html where you can add your signature.
