Bringing Bhangra to Birmingham: The Lions of Punjab

Birmingham Hippodrome’s annual free festival Summer in Southside will be a two-day celebration of the great outdoors.

Fiona Allan, the Hippodrome’s chief executive, said, “we’re very proud to be a part of Southside district and relish bringing the theatre’s surrounding streets to life with two days of free activities and family-friendly fun.

“As ever, we’ll be welcoming artists from across the globe to join in the festivities, giving people from all areas of Birmingham the chance to experience the fun of the great outdoors right here in the heart of our wonderful city.”

Summer in Southside takes place in and around Birmingham Hippodrome on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June.

Highlights will include a special performance from Birmingham Royal Ballet which will present The Chicken Dance from Frederick Ashton’s La Fille Mal Gardee.

Midlands-based Bhangra dance group The Lions of Punjab who have performed alongside some of Bollywood’s biggest artists will be performing.

Folk Dance Remixed is a “colourful and quirky collision of maypole, clog dancing, breakin’ and street dance” while Jaivant Patel Dance will take a taste of the South Asian subcontinent to Southside with a high-energy dance piece incorporating Gujurati and Raas Garba folk, performed to a soundtrack of contemporary Bollywood dance.

Imagineer Productions will stage Operation Migration, a tale of one man’s extraordinary endeavour to teach a gaggle of geese to fly, told through a combination of puppetry, dance and inventive design.

The full programme is available at the Birmingham Hippodrome web site.
