Two productions from Newcastle-under-Lyme’s New Vic have been nominated for UK Theatre awards.

Around the World in Eighty Days is in the running for best show for children and young people while An August Bank Holiday Lark, a co-production with Northern Broadsides, is up for best new play.

Directed by New Vic artistic director Theresa Heskins, Around the World in& Eighty Days, adapted by Laura Eason from the novel by Jules Verne, played at the New Vic before a six-week run at Manchester’s Royal Exchange in the first co-production between the two theatres.

Deborah McAndrew’s An August Bank Holiday Lark premièred at the New Vic before touring the country for five months. Marking the centenary of the start of World War I, the production explored the impact of the conflict on a rural community in East Lancashire.

Theresa Heskins said, “creating brilliant theatre for young people and families is important to us, as is developing new work and collaborating with partners old and new. It’s wonderful to see all three ambitions being acknowledged by these nominations.”

The awards ceremony will take place at London’s Guildhall on Sunday 19 October.
