UK dance festive season

Sadler’s Wells will present Sadler’s Wells Global Gala on Saturday 5 December, its first ever virtual fundraising gala, which will be broadcast online via YouTube. Featuring performances, sketches and messages from the Sadler's Wells global family of artists, appearances include Carlos Acosta, Akram Khan and Natalia Osipova, and Sadler's Wells ambassadors including sculptor Antony Gormley and actor and director Fiona Shaw.

Breakin’ Convention will present Social DisDancing 11–12 December at Sadler’s Wells, London, its first live events since lockdown and the cancellation of the 2020 Festival. This mini-festival of new work showcasing the best of hip hop dance features performances from all-female popping crew AIM, Jamaal O’Driscoll featuring b-boy Marius and Boy Blue. There will also be film screenings, including Jonzi D and jessica Care moore’s Our Bodies Back.

Ballo Arthur Pita will present The Little Match Girl 17–27 December at Sadler’s Wells, London.

Birmingham Royal Ballet and Birmingham Repertory Theatre will present The Nutcracker 14–22 December at Birmingham Repertory Theatre shortened to 80 minutes.

English National Ballet will present Nutcracker Delights 17 December–3 January at the London Coliseum, a selection of the ballet’s most popular moments and well-known scenes accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s score played live by musicians from English National Ballet Philharmonic.

New Adventures will present A Christmas Wish online, released 21 December, a short film devised and directed by Matthew Bourne of duets from New Adventures shows including Edward Scissorhands, Cinderella and Nutcracker! performed at Sadler’s Wells featuring principal dancers Cordelia Braithwaite, Paris Fitzpatrick, Glenn Graham, Andy Monaghan, Liam Mower, Dominic North and Ashley Shaw and two of the company’s young talents, Harrison Dowzell and Sharol Mackenzie.

Scottish Ballet will present The Secret Theatre - A Christmas Special 21 December 2020, available online until 24 December, created by CEO/Artistic Director Christopher Hampson and Lez Brotherston, alongside co-screen directors Jess & Morgs, starring characters and choreography from the company’s popular festive ballets set against a score of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, recorded live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.

The Royal Ballet's The Nutcracker returns 11 December 2020–3 January 2021, with tickets available from 1 December. New for the 2020 production is a battle scene between the Nutcracker, the Mouse King and their armies, choreographed by Will Tuckett. Leading up to this festive treat, a special filmed insight of The Nutcracker in Rehearsal will be available on the Royal Opera House YouTube channel on 1 December.

The Place and Peut-Etre Theatre will present an interactive performance workshop across primary school schools in Camden in December 2020. They will be visiting schools with performative workshops based around Peut-Être’s lockdown podcast series, Audiomoves, that transport children into different worlds through music and dance.
