Church Shuts Down Fringe Venue With three weeks to go to the start of the Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh Apostolic Church, which stands on the corner of West Richmond Street and Davie Street just across the road from the Pleasance, has decided to end the agreement with Understairs Arts to use the building as a Fringe venue for the first time this year, after a dispute over a scene in the play Double Dutch in which a man asks two women to have sex with him and another man and the women refuse. The church asked for the scene to be cut but the promoters refused, saying that the character subsequently learned the error of his ways, and permission to use the building was withdrawn. Calling the decision not to censor the play "unacceptable to us", Pastor Adrian Galley said, "With deep regret the leadership in the church took the decision that, in the absence of an agreement between us, we would have to walk away from our planned involvement in the Festival this year." Thirty shows were left homeless by the move but it is understood that all have now found alternative venues, with the disputed play, Double Dutch, moving to the Underbelly. Understairs Arts, which is a first-time Fringe promoter, has two other venues, Understairs@Euroscot in Palmerston Place and understairs@Royal Scots Club in Abercromby Place, both in the New Town.
Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
