Dateline: 5th June, 2011
New AD at the Unicorn Purni Morell is to be the new Artistic Director at the Unicorn Theatre, taking up the position in September, when she takes over from Tony Graham who steps down at the end of August after fourteen years in the role. She is currently Head of Studio at the National Theatre, where she has established herself as a cultivator of new thinking, new writing and new theatre forms. Under her leadership the Studio has nurtured major productions such as London Road, Nation and the forthcoming Light Princess.
Prior to her work at the National Theatre Studio, she worked in the Literary Department of the National Theatre in the 1990s before becoming Literary Manager at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 1998. She subsequently worked in the voluntary sector and in Latin America, returning to theatre to join Suspect Culture (Glasgow) as Administrative Producer in 2004. She set up gryllus in Scotland in 2005, to develop and produce the work of freelance directors and dancers in Scotland. She joined the National Theatre as Head of Studio in March 2007. She also works as a freelance theatre translator, adaptor and director, most recently with Muziektheater Transparant, Flemish Opera and François Archambault in Montréal.
Morell is joined at the helm by Anneliese Davidsen who will become the Unicorns new Executive Director. She has been in an interim role with the Unicorn since summer 2010, and most recently held the role of Executive Director at Paines Plough. Previous positions include Head of Corporate Relations at Sadlers Wells and the Young Vic. Purni Morell said, Its a very exciting time for childrens theatre just now, not least because there are so many talented people around the country making great shows specifically for younger audiences. The prospect of leading Britains largest theatre for young people is therefore tremendously exciting, and we look forward hugely to filling the Unicorn building with activity in the new season. And perhaps there will be some international gems as well.
Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
