Unknown Play to Premiere in June An as yet unknown play by an as yet unknown author will have its world premiere at the New Ambassadors on 22nd June (previews from 12th). Tickets went on sale on Friday 28th April. The unknown play is the winner of the four-part reality show The Play's the Thing (see our news story of 10th May, 2005), a search to find a new play by an unknown author, organised by Channel 4 in association with producer Sonia Friedman. The first programme airs on 12th June, the day the winning play begins previews and audiences will be asked to keep the title and author's name secret until the winner is revealed. Over 2,000 plays (synopsis, character list and sample scenes) were submitted, all of which were read by a panel of professional play readers who selected the best fifty. Friedman selected thirty of these and the authors met with a panel conisting of Friedman herself, playwrights agent Mel Kenyon and actor Neil Pearson, who reduced the number to ten. The ten authors then attended a masterclass with playwright Stephen Jeffreys (Valued Friends, A Going Concern, The Libertine, The Clink and I Just Stopped By to See the Man) after which they were asked to write the first draft. Workshops followed and the number was reduced to three and the winner was chosen from them. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
