Unwin Takes Over the Rose Stephen Unwin, the outgoing artistic director of English Touring Theatre, is to take over as artistic director of the newly opened Rose of Kingston from Sir Peter Hall who has held the position for five years and has been a fierce fighter for the new theatre. "Stephen Unwin's appointment as artistic director is a wonderful development in the Rose's story," Hall said, "and I am delighted he has accepted the post. "For the last five years my single aim has been to see the Rose Theatre completed and open. This is finally a reality and is therefore an appropriate moment for me to pass the director's baton. I am very proud of this wonderful theatre and delighted that, as director emeritus, I will remain closely involved with it, working in collaboration with Stephen Unwin." The Rose officially opens on Friday with Hall's production, for ETT, of Uncle Vanya. The theatre, the idea for which was first out forward in 1986 by Kingston residents and councillors, receives no Arts Council or Lottery funding and, although the £11m to build and open the theatre has been raised, further fund-raising is needed to secure operational costs beyond June. The theatre has a 900-capacity main house, modelled on the original Rose Theatre at which many of Shakespeare's plays premiered, a 220-seat studio and a gallery.
