V-Day

V-DAY COMES TO NOTTING HILL TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE V-DAY 2003 WORLDWIDE CAMPAIGN,

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

WILL BE PEFORMED AT THE
GATE THEATRE, NOTTING HILL
ON SUNDAY 16TH FEBRUARY, 2003 AT 7.30PM

In 2002, V-Day the global movement to stop violence against women and girls went grassroots and global. 800 highly successful V-Day Worldwide and College Campaign events were held around the world. They were responsible for raising more than $3 million through benefit productions of Eve Ensler's ground-breaking, Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues. Hot on the heels of their success, Notting Hill has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2003 Worldwide Campaign.

On Sunday February 16th 2003, at 7.30pm (plus an Open Dress at 2.30pm), V-Day NOTTING HILL will present a one-night only benefit production of The Vagina Monologues at The Gate Theatre.

"As V-Day benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues reach more people, as the V-energy spreads, 2003 must be the year when we envision a new world, where violence has ended and V-World is finally born," Ensler says…

  • At least 1 in 3 women and girls has been beaten or sexually abused in her lifetime. (UN Report on the Commission on the Status of Women, February 2000)
  • In the UK 70% of children staying with their mothers in refuges have also been abused by their father. (Bowker L, Artbitell M, and McFerron J, 1998)
  • 1 in 5 young men and 1 in 10 young women in the UK think that abuse or violence against women is acceptable. (Zero Tolerance Charitable Trust, 1998)
  • Proceeds from this community event will be donated to the London Centre for Personal Safety / Project Juarez, W11 and the Women and Girl's Network, W14.

What is V-Day?

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop worldwide violence against women and girls including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sexual slavery. V-Day provides funding to create and nurture innovative programs to stop the violence.

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. V-Day itself stages large-scale benefits and promotes innovative gatherings and programs (The Afghan Women's Summit, The Stop Rape Contest, Indian Country Project, and more) to change social attitudes about violence against women. In 2002, more than 800 V-Day benefit events were presented by local volunteer activists around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.

The V-Day movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national, and international organisations and programmes that work to stop violence against women and girls. It was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities" in 2001. In its first five years, the V-Day movement has raised over $14 million, with over $7 million raised in 2002 alone.
