New Welsh Culture Minister Alun Ffred Jones has been appointed as Culture and Heritage Minister in the Wales Assembly Government, following the resignation of Rhodri Glyn Thomas, First Minister Rhodri Morgan announced this week. Alun Ffred Jones, who is AM for Arfon, is deputy leader of Plaid Cymru and a former teacher, journalist for HTV and TV producer and director with Ffilmiau'r Nant, Caernarfon. He was appointed after the departure of Rhodri Glyn Thomas who resigned after two widely-publicised incidents when he announced the wrong winner at the Welsh Book of the Year awards and later walked into a Cardiff pub smoking a cigar. In his resignation letter he wrote, "In the light of the publicity that has been following me in the last weeks I feel that my position in the government is no longer sustainable."
