Dance in Wales

The Welsh Assembly Government will implement in full the recommendations of the report of the Culture Committee's review of dance in Wales of December 2005, culture minister Alun Pugh said yesterday (14th March).

How it will do so:

  • An additional £125,000 a year is to be made available to implement the findings of the Committee reviews of dance and the arts and community regeneration
  • A dance strategy is to be developed by the Arts Council of Wales to encourage more participation in dance
  • Dance will feature in the Welsh Assembly Government's new cultural policy
  • The network of regional dance forums will be brought together to create a National Forum for Dance
  • Developing wider opportunities for dance in 14-19 learning
  • The Arts Council is to work closely with the Sports Council for Wales to develop dance participation in order to contribute to the physical activity targets set in the Welsh Assembly Government's sport and physical activity strategy, Climbing Higher

"There is no doubt that there is much to celebrate in dance in Wales at present," he said." Young dancers from Wales are making names for themselves, particularly in contemporary dance. We have seen dance performances from international ballet companies such as the Kirov for the first time in Wales as well as innovative productions from our own dance companies such as Earthfall, Diversions and India Dance Wales.

"There is a wealth of good practice in Wales at community level, at national level and in innovative cutting edge work. Much also remains to be done, of course, and the Welsh Assembly Government welcomes the report of the Culture Committee as an important contribution to the future of dance in Wales."

"The announcement of extra funding is very welcome," Arts Council of Wales chief executive Peter Tyndall said, "and will start to address the need for further investment in the sector. ACW looks forward to working with the dance community and the Welsh Assembly Government to develop a thriving future for dance in Wales."
