Dateline: 10th December, 2006 No Smoking on Welsh Stages Like the Scotland, the Wales has decided that there will be no exception to the smoking ban for performances on stage, and, as in Scotland but unlike Ireland, herbal cigarettes will also be banned. The ban comes into force on 2nd April, assuming that - as expected - it will be approved by the Assembly at a meeting on 23rd January. The TMA, along with the rest of the arts world, had argued that an on-stage ban would compromise artistic integrity but local government enforcement officers argued that they were not qualified to make that decision and do not know of anyone who is. The drafters of the bill agreed with the latter and the Assembly's health minister added that he felt it is not beyond the wit of "thespians" to simulate smoking. However the health department is keen to point out that they have banned "all lit substances". When the smoking ban comes into operation in England, there will be exceptions made for stage performances where "artistic integrity makes it appropriate.
