The award-winning play Not About Heroes comes to The Dukes in Lancaster this month during its world tour, marking the centenary of the first meeting between Wilfred Own and Siegfried Sassoon.
It is staged on October 24 and 25 in a city which has its own claim to war poetry fame as the birthplace of Laurence Binyon who wrote the oft-quoted lines “They shall grow not old.”
Not About Heroes tells the story of Owen and Sassoon who met as patients at Craiglockhart Hospital in 1917. Owen was suffering from shell-shock and Sassoon, a decorated war hero, had become a public dissenter.
