War Horse Film Cast Announced

Steven Spielberg has announced casting for his film version of Michael Morpurgo's War Horse, which will be based on both the original children's book and the National Theatre's stage version.

Jeremy Irvine will play the lead character Albert, with Emily Watson as his mother. Also in the cast are Niels Arestrup, David Thewlis, David Kross and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The screenplay will be written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis. Nick Stafford's stage version, which opened at the National in 2007 and is currently playing at the New London will transfer to Broadway's Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center on 14th April, 2011 (previews from 17th March).

Shooting is to begin in the UK this summer and the film is due for release in August 2011.
