Watch This Space!

Next week - Friday, 18th June, to be precise - sees the start of Watch This Space, the National Theatre's free outdoor summer festival on Theatre Square. It runs for ten weeks, six days a week, with over a hundred performances from 75 companies, and, for the fist time this year, late-night Saturday film screenings. And it's all free.

Now in its seventh year, Watch This Space has established itself as one of the largest, most eclectic and dynamic outdoor festivals in the UK. Comprising theatre, music, acrobatics, comedy and dance from all over the world, it provides an ideal way to liven up a lunch hour, a place to meet for a drink with friends, a great day out for all the family or an inexpensive Saturday night out soaking up the atmosphere of the South Bank. No matter how young or old you are, whether you're a Londoner or visitor, whether or not you're attending a show at the NT, Watch This Space offers world-class entertainment for all tastes.

The theatre element is programmed by NT's events director Jonathan Holloway. He joined joined the National Theatre in 1997 to set up the Events Department. He is Director of Watch this Space and the Festival of Lights (the National's bi-annual winter festival).

He is founding director of Elemental Arts, and was the creative director of Elemental, a large-scale theatre, music, street arts and site-specific event showcasing UK work at Chalon Festival in France in July in 2003. Jonathan is currently the Chair of Total Theatre.

The music is programmed by Alessandra Satta and Sun Lounges by Julia Simon.

The finest street performance including theatre, dance, acrobatics, comedy, mime and spectacle from the UK, Europe and beyond.
  • Music in the Square Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday early evening at 6.15pm
Al fresco gigs on the band stage: world-ranking contemporary musicians provide the best in upbeat world, jazz, fusion, dance and folk music
  • Sun Lounges Saturday afternoons from 2.15pm
Following last year's success, the Sun Lounges return. DJs spinning laid-back grooves with occasional live accompaniment bring a truly chilled festival feel to Theatre Square.
  • Waterloo Sunsets Saturdays from 19 June - 24 July, 10.30pm - midnight
Brilliant events ranging from world music extravaganzas to theatrical spectaculars.
  • Waterloo Cinés Saturdays from 31 July - 21 August, 10.00pm / 10.30pm - midnight
This year's new addition - iconic feature films projected on to the 23 metre high Lyttelton flytower with musicians providing live soundtracks on selected weeks. The audience will be able to watch the film from deck chairs laid out on the National's terraces and on an additional screen in Theatre Square.
