Dateline: 12th January, 2003 The New Season at Newbury's Watermill Theatre It's been a great year for the Watermill, with three nominations in the Barclays/TMA Awards, two of which won their category: Edward Hall's Rose Rage won Best Touring Show and John Doyle's Fiddler on the Roof won Best Musical. This coming year starts with Edward Hall's startling new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which will go on a national tour. Hot on its heels is a new play, Gigolo, written and directed by Ade Morris, which also tours. Two new commissions. John Doyle, together with Sarah Travis, are currently writing a new musical inspired by MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and Alan Plater is also busy writing a new play for the Watermill, both of which can be seen in the autumn. Wed 5th February to Sat 22nd March Edward Hall and his all male company return to the Watermill following
their London run and UK tour of the award-winning Rose Rage with
an altogether more romantic production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.
Be prepared for a sizzling production of what is arguably Shakespeare's
best-loved play. Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29th March Following his huge success with I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls,
Ade Morris delves into the world of two middle-aged men. It's odd jobs
for them but only now and then, booze, telly, rent - all on the never
never, and, it's raining
it always is. They decide that they need
to change their luck and embark on a personal make-over
they are
going to be gigolos. This hilarious new comedy follows the ludicrous
adventures of two ordinary men in the world of love, lust and dinner.
Ever eager to encourage new talent the Watermill's search for new writers reaches fruition. Six writers, selected from over seventy submissions by a team of professional practitioners, will have had the opportunity of working with a professional director and actors to present their play as a rehearsed reading in the theatre in front of an audience. Writers of all cultures and backgrounds have been encouraged to explore the richness of the English language and the visual and emotional dynamics that theatre can offer. This week of plays is the result. A different play will be presented each evening and there will be a discussion after each reading.
A princess falls in love with an exiled prince, and disguises herself as a man to infiltrate the home of his guardian. Hoping to win his heart she charms everyone who meets her. Soon a woman falls in love with her thinking she's a man, a man falls in love with her thinking she's a woman, and the object of her true desire just wants to be friends. Comic chaos and confusion follows in a joyous, classic romp.
DREAMS FROM A SUMMER HOUSE is a fabulous comic musical fantasy fairy-tale for adults. Whilst a couple prepare for a garden party, their charming but hapless ex-son-in-law Robert is ensconced in their summer house busy illustrating a new edition of Beauty and the Beast. As the evening and his alcohol consumption progress Belle, his fantasy beauty comes to life closely followed by the Baldemar the Beast who kidnaps Amanda, Robert's ex-wife and carries her off to his castle. Pattison's delicious score is a celebration of music from the operatic to pop. Watermill Young Company Pip is a car thief with attitude, Mel a woman with a dangerous hobby (dangerous for the men in her life), and Josephine, well Josephine thinks she's a television set, but only when she's turned on. This poetic, moving and funny new play is performed by the innovative Watermill Young Company. Watermill Schools Project The theme of CALL TO THE SKY is communication as a force for understanding and peace across communities and racial divides. By delving into the meaning and resonance of the various lines of communication which criss-cross our physical and emotional landscapes, a single message is moulded, a single call, a plea for understanding and tolerance across nations and languages. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
