January to July at the Watermill

The Watermill Theatre in Newbury (see our story about its being saved) has announced its programme from January through to July:

Wed 31st Jan - Sat 3rd Mar
Plunder
By Ben Travers
Plunder, one of the great Aldwych farces by celebrated writer Ben Travers CBE, is considered one of the most influential plays of the twentieth century. Complications and outrageous shenanigans pile on each other with dangerous and comical consequences. Will Scotland Yard get their man, or will the audacious burglar and his inept chum actually get away with it?

Wed 7th Mar - Sat 14th Apr
For Services Rendered
By W Somerset Maugham
Directed by Edward Hall
Set in the picturesque Kentish village of Rambleton, the play is a metaphor for the shattering effect of the Great War on British society. Written by a man who experienced first hand the horrors of this catastrophic conflict whilst serving as part of an ambulance unit behind Allied lines, the play asks what has happened to “the land fit for heroes” promised by Lloyd George. Described in 1932 by the Daily Express as: “a play of malevolent propaganda.”

Tue 17th Apr - Sat 21st Apr
The Story of a Great Lady
Written and directed by Ade Morris
Francesca is a struggling journalist, a little cranky, close to retirement. Following the death of her husband she starts a new writers group - to try to do something more creative for a change. She meets the eccentric Annie and mysterious Stef, and the three of them decide to write a play, perhaps unwisely, about Boadicea. As they get to know each other the women discover that they have much in common in relation to men and to each other, but none could have suspected how greatly their lives would connect, or how profoundly they might change during the mad, magic rehearsals for The Story Of A Great Lady.

Wed 25th Apr - Sat 26th May
The Rise and Fall of Little Voice
By Jim Cartwright
Winner of the 1992 Evening Standard Best Comedy Award and the 1993 Olivier Award for Best Comedy.
