The watermill Theatre

Watermill for Sale

The Watermill Theatre in Newbury, also known as the West Berkshire Playhouse, is up for sale.

It has been run for 23 years by husband and wife team James Sargant and Jill Fraser (artistic director), who set up the theatre, converted from an old watermill. Now they want to retire and so have put the 220-seater venue up for sale. A new trust, the Watermill Theatre Trust, and an associated appeals board have been set up to raise £3m to buy the theatre, for which the asking price is £1.7m, and for necessary refurbishment, which includes new sewage and drainage and an increased water supply.

The whole complex - theatre, car park, restaurant, actors' accommodation, gardens, a house and offices - is for sale.

Although the Watermill is best known as the home of Edward Hall's all-male Propeller Theatre Company, which has just finished touring The Winter's Tale and whose previous shows, Rose Rage and A Midsummer Night's Dream, both went into the West End, its own musicals have had some considerable success, with associate director John Doyle's Sweeney Todd about to open on Broadway.

It also runs the Watermill Young Company and the Watermill Youth Theatre, works in schools with both students and staff, as well as design and theatre-related workshops and inservice training for businesses and education.
