Watford Palace Re-opens in October Watford's Palace Theatre will re-open on 8th October after being closed for a £8.7m refurbishment for nearly two years. Builit in 1908, the theatre retained much of the original equipment, fixtures and fittings and the fabric of the theatre and the technical equipment posed a significant health and safety risk to staff. If not addressed, the Health and Safety Executive would have closed the theatre. In addition, to comply with the current Disability Discrimination legislation cost in the region of £2.5. Delays hampered the refurbishment but now it will re-open in the autumn with a production of Wycherleys The Country Wife in a new version by Tanika Gupta. Gupta, who created Hobson's Choice for the Young Vic, has set the action in contemporary Britain in a multi-racial community. Directed by the theatre's artistic director Lawrence Till, the production runs from 8th to 30th October and a special celebratory gala performance will be held on 21st. The theatre's next production will be the pantomime Mother Goose (subtitled Three Weddings and a Golden Egg), which runs from 3rd December to 9th January 2005. This will be followed by Sitting Pretty by Amy Rosenthal, the daughter of recently deceased writer Jack Rosenthal and actress Maureen Lipman. The theatre will also function as a receiving house and tour secondary schools with Hanif Kureishis adaptation of Mother Courage and Her Children. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
