£2M for Welsh Arts

Welsh culture minister Alan Pugh has announced that £2m is to be invested in the arts in Wales outside of Cardiff, which is already receiving £37m for the new Wales Millennium Centre.

Most of the money will go towards staging high quality productions in medium-sized theatres and the rest to small-scale venues. "With realistic ticket prices, the minimum of travel, focused marketing and a compelling product I believe we can bring the performing arts to an audience that has previously been excluded," the minister told Assembly members.

He added that £250,000 will be available in the first year and that the cash would be distributed through the Arts Council of Wales where it would be "ring-fenced", so that it could not be spent on anything else. The spending, he went on, would be "reasonaly concentrated" so that it would not be spread too thinly, something which worried shadow culture minister Owen John Thomas.
