Welsh Stars Honoured

Jonathan Pryce, star of this summer’s blockbuster movie Pirates of the Caribbean, is amongst the recipients of the HSBC’s 2006 Cymry for the World Honours - the biennial honours, introduced in 2004 when Wales Millennium Centre first opened, which pay tribute to Welsh artists who have made an outstanding contribution to the world of music, theatre and film.

Five Welsh legends in total are to receive this prestigious honour, the others being the Manic Street Preachers, Stuart Burrows, Dr Karl Jenkins and the Cardiff born matinee idol and composer, Ivor Novello. They follow in the footsteps of the first recipients, Richard Burton, Dame Gwyneth Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Alun Hoddinott and Siân Phillips, who will host the 2006 honours celebration.

This biennial event will take place at Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) on Sunday 26 November, its second birthday. The Centre hosts these honours in celebration of the immense talent that Wales nurtures and exports on to the world stage. “This,” said Chief Executive Judith Isherwood, “is very much in keeping with our own cultural ambitions to take the best of Wales to the world whilst bringing the best of the world to Wales.”

“We felt it appropriate to make this announcement last night (10th September) to coincide with the Ivor Novello’s Glamorous Night concert at the Novello Theatre in London. This is the first show we’ve produced in the West End and we hope it will be the first of many.”

“For a small country,” she added, “with a population of just three million, Wales has always punched above its weight in the performing arts world and continues to do so in music, film and theatre. Through HSBC’s 2006 Cymry for the World Honours we want to not only celebrate the immense contribution that these hugely talented professionals have made, but also recognise the role that Wales itself plays in continuing to nurture and encourage new talent.”

The internationally renowned artists, recipients of the HSBC’s 2006 Cymry for the World Honours, will be honoured at a prestigious black tie event in the Donald Gordon Theatre. Amongst the guests will be their friends, colleagues and contemporary stars from stage and screen, who will present a series of musical, film and performance tributes based upon their life and work. While the names of those artists honouring the recipients are being kept strictly under wraps, it promises to be a night to remember, with performances from some of the world’s greatest artists. Some tickets will be available to the public and will go on sale on Monday, 25th September.
