Hannah Jones, arts editor of Wales' national newpaper, The Western
Mail, has listed the top fifty people on the Welsh arts scene, excluding,
she says, "critics, arts patrons, publishers, film makers, marketing
gurus, radio producers, performers, television executives and lots of
high-brow practitioners."
Her list includes twelve theatre people, including the editor/webmaster
of the Theatre in Wales
website, Keith Morris. The top twelve are:
1. Terry Hands
Spent 20 years as a director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and
five as its artistic leader, now artistic director of Clwyd Theatr
Cymru in Mold.
2. Simon Harris
Simon heads Sgript Cymru, the national company for contemporary drama
in Wales, specialising in new writing by Welsh and Wales-based playwrights.
His visionary approach to drama has also been acknowledged by the
Clore Duffield Foundation which has made him the first Welsh recipient
of a prized Clore fellowship which promotes leadership in the arts.
3. Michael Bogdanov
Co-founder and artistic director of the English Shakespeare Company,
now artistic director of the Wales Theatre Company. Highly respected
throughout Europe.
4. Keith Morris
Editor and webmaster of the Theatre in Wales website, who launched
the Theatre in Wales Awards four years ago which are one of the highlights
of the Welsh performing arts calendar.
5. Peter Doran

building-based producing theatres in Wales.
6. Cefin Roberts

Genedlaethol Cymru, was set up. And Cefin was brought in as its director.
Welsh language TGC cover the whole of Wales and Cefin makes sure it
tours its work to the main Welsh theatre venues.
7. Janek Alexander
With Hannah Firth in the gallery and James Tyson booking theatre,
Janek runs the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, arguably Wales
leading centre for contemporary art, performance and film. He is the
chair of PAG (Presenting the Arts Group) and is very active in lobbying
on behalf of the performance sector in Wales.
8. Tim Baker
Associate director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold, he has directed
a wealth of shows.
9. Firenza Guidi

Live Arts Network), she is behind the unique performance/montage method
of work. She develops material created through an intense practical
investigation on a specific theme.
10. Roy Campbell-Moore
Along with Ann Sholem, Roy founded Diversions, the national dance
company of Wales, more than 20 years ago. Today he is the companys
director and hes also one of Wales best-known choreographers
who is always keen to introduce audiences to innovative pieces.
11. Phil Clark
Artistic director of Cardiffs Sherman Theatre, one of just three
producing houses in Wales.
12. Gary Owen
Gary, from Pembrokeshire, started his career as a playwright in 2001.
Among his hits have been Crazy Garys Mobile Disco which
had a successful run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His work recently
featured in the On The Edge season at Chapter Arts Centre in
Cardiff.
