Wend Richard

Wendy Richard (1943 - 2009)

TV actress Wendy Richard has died of cancer at the age of 65.

She is best known today for her long-running role at Pauline Fowler in EastEnders, although she is still remembered as Miss Brahms in the sit-com Are You Being Served? and its follow-up, Grace and Favour. She also appeared in one of the BBC's first soaps, The Newcomers, in 1965, her first big TV break.

Other TV shows in which she appeared ncluded Dixon of Dock Green, No Hiding Place, Hugh And I and Dad's Army. In film she appeared in On The Buses, Gumshoe, Bless This House, Carry On Matron and Carry On Girls.

Although she usually played a cockney, she was in fact born in Middlesbrough but the family moved south - first to Bournemouth, then the Isle of Wight and finally the West End of London- when she was still an infant.

She was awarded the MBE in the Millennium honours list of 2000.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and, after surgery and radiotherapy, was given the all-clear. The cancer returned again in 2002 and, after treatment, went into remission. However it returned lasty year, moving into her kidneys, bones and spine, and she announced in October that it was terminal. She died in a Harley Street clinic today.
