Another Record Year in the West End 2008 was another record year for London Theatre, figures released by the Society for London Theatre reveal. Attendance was up 1% on 2007 to 13,807,286, and box office receipts rose to £480,563,674, a 3% increase. Attendance at musicals increased by 1% but plays fell by the same amount. However, the rest - opera, ballet, dance and "entertaiment" rose by 5%. Demand did lessen in the second half of the year but increased during the Christmas period. The Society of London Theatre's chief executive Richard Pulford said, "These figures are good news for the performing arts, and for the UK economy. Theatregoers are out there spending money not just at our box offices but in hotels, restaurants and shops in the capital. 2009 will undoubtedly be tough, but we start the year with the Theatre Capital of the World in good health." The figures relate to the 52 members of SOLT, all the commercial West End venues together with the major grant-aided London theatres.
