The West End Can't Compete, Says Lloyd Webber

So far from the commercial and subsidised sectors working on a level playing-field, says Andrew Lloyd Webber. it is "not unlevel. It's almost a vertical drop."

Webber told The Stage (5th Feb.) that he intends to raise the possibility of tax breaks for theatrical producers, after the pattern of those given for film, in the House of Lords.

"The entire profit of all four Shaftesbury Avenue playhouses from 1945 to the present day," he added, "is less than the money given to the Royal Court to refurbish."

He is not, he said, calling for tax breaks for all shows - certainly not for those like The Producers or Mary Poppins - but for "some young producers".

The film industry tax breaks give 100% tax write-off in the first year for qualifying films.
