Record Visitors at West End LIVE

West End LIVE, which attracted up to 250,000 visitors over two days, is estimated to have given recession-hit businesses a £2million boost.

The free annual event organised by Westminster City Council attracted a record number of visitors. As well as the knock-on effect for restaurants, bars, shops as families turned their trip into a day out, the £1billion a year West End theatre industry also anticipates a surge in demand after appearances from top names including Jason Donovan, who stars in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and talkshow host Jerry Springer, who performed as Billy Flynn in hit show Chicago.

Cllr Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster City Council, said, “Theatreland makes a vital contribution to the capital's economy and attracts visitors from across the globe who stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and, of course, shop in the West End. Although compared to the rest of the country the West End has proved relatively resilient to the recession largely thanks to foreign visitors, it is still a tough time for many businesses.

"The council's £100,000 investment in West End LIVE reaps huge returns and is a key part of our efforts to help the economic recovery of the city. The theatre industry has just celebrated its most successful year ever and I am confident given the quality and variety of shows its success will continue.

“A large proportion of those who took advantage of the free entertainment will no doubt go on to make bookings. The great thing about an event like this is that it opens up theatre to a whole new audience and reminds many visitors how exciting a trip to the West End is."
