West to Leave Sheffield Samuel West is to leave his post as artistic director or Sheffield Theatres at the end of the current season of productions in April. Two of the theatres, the Crucible and the Crucible Studio, are to close for refurbishment for most of the 2007/8 season and so it was, as a statement from the Theatres says, "agreed that this was a good point to allow West to leave and pursue other projects." This decision was, the statement also said, "reached by mutual consent of both West and Sheffield Theatres Trust." West's final production as a director will be As You Like It with Eve Best (7th to 24th February, then in Stratford as part of the Complete Works Festival), and the last production of his régime will be Jonathan Miller's production of The Cherry Orchard, starring Joanna Lumley as Madame Ranevskaya, which ends on 7th April, at which point West will depart. West said, "The Crucible is an incredible theatre. Ive thoroughly enjoyed my time as artistic director, working with some extraordinarily talented people and getting to know this wonderful city... In the short term, I feel that its time for me to explore other creative opportunities." He has been invited to become an associate artist and to return to the theatres as either actor or director. Referring to West's time at Sheffield, chair Paul Allen said, "The sheer quality of acting and production this season has had a consistent excellence which equals anything seen on the Crucible stage in its 35-year history, and anything currently available in British theatre." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
