Dateline: 22nd October, 2004
West Follows Grandage at Sheffield Samuel West is to take over a artistic director of Sheffield Theatres after the departure of Michael Grandage in June 2005. Officially Grandage is associate director (he is also artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse) but West's title will be artistic director. "The present high standing of Sheffield Theatres," West sayd, "has come from a combination of great leadership and the perfect mix of spaces. The Crucible in particular is one of the most exciting stages in the country, and Im looking forward to exploring it both as an actor and a director." Grandage, describing the appointment as "wonderful", added, "Sam has the talent, profile, drive and enthusiasm to ensure Sheffield Theatres goes from strength to strength." West made his move into directing in 2002 at Chichester Festival (with The Lady's Not For Burning) but he will continue to act, he says. He was already due to direct Insignificance at Sheffield in February 2005 before the appointment was made.
