We Will Rock You Tour Launches

After once being delayed by snow, the official launch event for Queen musical We Will Rock You went ahead last night (24th February 2009) at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manchester.

Scriptwriter Ben Elton, Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor stood before press and guests to talk about how excited they are to be taking their smash hit London show on tour, opening at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on 20 March until 6 June.

Elton, who studied drama at Manchester University from 1977 to 1980, said that they are "still one hundred per cent committed to this show", adding "we were waiting to close in London; we thought let's get London out of the way and go to a real city", getting cheers when he referred to Manchester. However as the London show "wouldn't close" they brought it anyway. He reassured audiences that "the show we will be bringing to Manchester will be in scale, in scope and in ambition every bit the equal of the London production."

Of his script, he said that the show is a real family show, "apart from the odd tasteful nob-gag" and a few things he referred to as "SFTD – Something For The Dads". The story was famously ridiculed by the London critics when it originally opened, but it has been filling the huge Dominion Theatre for the last seven years.

Taylor said, "We are really thrilled to bring We Will Rock You to Manchester. I think in these horrible times we just have to bring a bit of fun, happiness to everybody that goes to see it, and we're very proud of it," before revealing that his son is the drummer for the show.

May also talked of his excitement about bringing the show to Manchester, adding, "This is a fantastic new adventure for us. We've been involved with this thing for seven years, and it's a world we never dreamed we would be a part of. We have a fantastic cast and a fantastic band and it's all live."

It was recently announced that the cast would include actor and musician Jonathan Wilkes and former Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy alongside Brenda Edwards of ITV1’s Britannia High, Georgina Hagen and I’d Do Anything contestant Ashley Russell.

After showing a compilation video of the show, the three creative stars were interviewed onstage and then answered questions from the audience. Anyone buying tickets on the night was put into a draw to win a guitar signed by May.

After Manchester, the production will tour to the Bristol Hippodrome, Edinburgh Playhouse and Sunderland Empire.
