Christopher Eccleston is to star as Christopher Marlowe in Peter Whelan's play The School of Night which opens at the Comedy Theatre on opens on 27th February (previews from 16th). Directed by Bill Alexander, the play is an historical thriller based upon the mysterious death of the playwright, poet and spy in 1593, when he was stabbed by a drinking companion in a tavern. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of self-defence but many scholas believe that it was due to his activities as a government spy. Whelan is an Honorary Associate Artist of the RSC which first produced The School of Night in 1993. Other work for the RSC includes The Accrington Pals, The Herbal Bed and A Russian in the Woods.
