Dateline: 5th July, 2009
Oldham Wordsmith 2009 Festival Oldham Coliseum Theatre is once again hosting Wordsmith, a week-long festival of activities and events that focus on new writing and writers. The week opens with play surgeries with the Coliseum's own writers' group WritingLAB, which will allow a limited number of spectators to watch four different writers explore their scripts with a director and actors. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance. Artistic director Kevin Shaw will direct a rehearsed reading of new play Bric A Brac by Nawal Gadalla set in a charity shop, there will be a rehearsed reading of a play by one of the WritingLAB group and WritingLAB leader Billy Cowan's play Care Takers set in a cash-strapped Catholic school will be performed by Truant Company. Peshkar Productions will present an evening of new writing from Write House, a new project that brings together people with varying experience of scriptwriting. North West Playwrights will again be involved, hosting two events on the festival's final day: Cutting It On The Fringe where you can hear from people who organise fringe festivals and run fringe venues in the region about how to get your work staged and The Voice of Experience featuring extracts from works-in-progress by four experienced writers Charlotte Keatley, Lavinia Murray, Jane McNulty and Lindsay Williams. The festival will take place from 6 to 11 July at Oldham Coliseum Theatre. More details can be found on the theatre's web site at www.coliseum.org.uk/?id=398. David Chadderton
