It was bound to happen! Given all the hype surrounding the football
World Cup (that's soccer, not the American game), we were bound to see
at least some football-related shows. To date, we've heard of three:
A Carpet, a Pony and a Monkey (currently at the Bush until
15th June) is written by Mike Packer who was commissioned by the Bush
to follow ticket touts to Euro 2000. The play follows the fortunes
of one tout, Baz, who lost £1m on dot.com shares and is now
trying to recover from his losses by selling tickets for the England-Germany
match.
On Our Way to Lisbon (Arches, Glasgow: 30th May to 1st June),
written by Patrick Prior, is performed by Isosceles. It tells the
story of how, in 1967, Glasgow Celtic became the first British team
to win the European Cup victory over the mighty Inter Milan. Two fans
look back and fondly recreate how the underdogs beat the hardest team
in the world and draped Europe in green, white and gold!
From 25th June to 20th July, the Riverside Studios revive An Evening
with Gary Lineker, set during the 1990 World Cup.
