Paul Nicholas

Yeomen at the Tower

A special performance of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard is to be staged at The Tower of London to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry VII.

The new Carl Rosa Opera production will star Paul Nicholas Jack Point, with Gareth Jones (Sir Richard Cholmondeley), Donald Maxwell (Wilfred Shadbolt), David Curry (Colonel Fairfax) , Bruce Graham (Sergeant Meryll), Charlotte Page (Elsie Maynard), Victoria Byron (Phoebe Meryl), Susan Gorton (Dame Carruthers) and Catrine Kirkman (Kate).

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1888 to celebrate the renovation of The Tower of London, The Yeoman of the Guard is Gilbert & Sullivan's dark grand opera-style tribute to 'the grim old Tower'. Sullivan wrote the piece during a bout of depression in which he accused himself wasting his talents musical comedies instead of writing grand opera and consequently The Yeoman of the Guard is one of his more serious operas. This production will be the 121st anniversary of the operas' first presentation in 1888 at the Savoy Theatre.

The production will run from the 13th - 15th September at The Tower of London as part of the Tower Festival, which also includes concerts from Kiri Te Kanawa and Lesley Garrett and a A Gala Evening of Dance from Sadler's Wells, starring Tamara Rojo, Paco Pena and Company, Anton du Beke and Erin Boag, the Richard Alston Dance Company and street dance company Bounce.
