Young Vic Award

This year’s Young Vic Award was presented to Hilary Vernon-Smith on Thursday 19th July at the National Theatre to endorse her major contribution to the theatre design industry in the UK.

The Young Vic Award is given annually to a theatre professional who, through their life’s work, has encouraged and inspired a younger generation of theatre people.

Recipients are chosen by a panel of Young Vic staff and guests including: directors Stephen Daldry, Phyllida Lloyd and Rufus Norris; designers Alison Chitty, Rob Howell, Richard Hudson and Ian MacNeil; Lighting Designer Rick Fisher and Sound Designer Paul Arditti.

Hilary Vernon-Smith originally joined the National Theatre in November 1987 as temporary maternity cover for one of the scene painters and was appointed to her present post of Head Scenic Artist in December 1988. Since then she has overseen the painting of over 350 National Theatre productions and worked closely with a wide range of theatre designers.

She originally trained on the Theatre Design Course at Croyden College of Art in the 1970s before painting and designing sets for both opera and theatre across the country as well as teaching scene painting and prop making at Rose Bruford College.

She has always been keen to develop both her own skills and those of her staff in both traditional and new forms of the art. Her reputation in her field was recognised this year when the Traditional Paint Forum invited her to talk to them about aspects of scene painting.

Phyllida Lloyd says, “Hilary Vernon smith epitomizes all that the Young Vic Award stands for. She is an unsung heroine of British theatre, an inspired artist and mentor to generations of younger scenic painters and designers. The queen of the paintframe!”

The Young Vic award has previously been presented to Clare Venables (2003) of the Royal Shakespeare Company for her work with directors and designers, Elyse Dodgson (2004) of the Royal Court for her international work with writers, and Phillip Turner (2005) of the English National Opera for his work with stage-managers.
