Linda Gray

Autumn in York

York Theatre Royal has announced its autumn season, offering a diverse range of shows including the World Premières of Terms of Endearment, featuring Hollywood star Linda Gray, Anne Cassidy’s much loved novel, Looking for JJ, and a new version of Pinocchio; as well as a staging of the rarely performed Alan Bennett play, Enjoy, and finally the return of Berwick Kaler for York Theatre Royal’s legendary pantomime.

The season kicks off in late August with the world premiere of Dan Gordon’s adaptation of the Oscar winning film Terms of Endearment, featuring Hollywood actress Linda Gray. A heartfelt comedy drama, it explores the love-hate-love relationship between Aurora, devoted but often opinionated mother, and Emma, her headstrong and often pregnant daughter. As Aurora struggles to impose order on her wayward daughter’s chaotic life, she finds her own taking an unexpectedly thrilling turn: she falls deeply in love for the first time in her life. Alas Garrett, once an astronaut now a full time philanderer, seems to be as much a cad as her daughter’s husband. Only when tragedy strikes the family is he revealed as a man of honour.

The world premiere of Terms of Endearment features an all-star cast alongside Linda Gray including Suranne Jones (Coronation Street and the West End production of A Few Good Men) and John Bowe (Prime Suspect and Tipping the Velvet) and runs from 24th August to 15th September.

After their success last year with Roy Williams’ critically acclaimed play Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads, Pilot Theatre make a welcome return to the stage with the world première of Anne Cassidy’s award winning story Looking For JJ. The murder of a child can unite the entire nation in horror, but when the killer is a child herself it is incomprehensible. Jennifer Jones is such a child. Looking for JJ considers how she might feel, six years later, when she has been released from custody and is trying to make a life for herself, with a new identity. Directed by Pilot’s artistic director, Marcus Romer, Looking for JJ runs in the Main House from 28th September to 6th October.

October will also see York Theatre Royal teaming up with two of the country’s leading theatre companies for actors with learning disabilities, Full Body and The Voice and The Shysters, for the World Premiere of a new version of the children’s classic Pinocchio. Anarchically exuberant and savagely funny, this new production brings a dark and refreshing twist to the classic tale of Pinocchio – the boy who was made with a heart as hard as wood… Disney this ain't! Pinocchio runs on the main stage from the 19th to 27th October.

In November artistic director Damian Cruden returns to the main house after the success of Bouncers, with the York Theatre Royal production of Alan Bennett’s rarely performed play Enjoy. Wilf and Connie Craven seem pretty familiar: getting on a bit, bickering a bit, wondering if the kids will ever come and visit them in their cramped back-to-back in Leeds. They’re just normal, aren’t they? So why is there an ‘observer’ quietly scribbling in the corner of the room? And what are all the secrets that threaten to bring the Cravens’ house down around their ears? Alan Bennett’s brilliantly dark tale of class values runs from 3rd to 24th November.

Fans of Lip Service will be delighted to know that the York Theatre Royal favourites are back with their latest hilarious production, Jane Bond. It runs from 27th November to 1st December.

And in Berwick Kaler returns to York Theatre Royal with a very special production of Sinbad the Sailor which runs from 13th December to 2nd February.
