ITV Takes Over Young Directors Scheme

ITV has announced that it is to take over sponsorship of the UK's most prestigious directors' scheme as it nears its 50th year. The scheme, previously run by Channel 4, will continue to further and develop the careers of young theatre directors by awarding three bursaries each year.

ITV Theatre Director Scheme will allow directors to spend one year training and developing their talents in a professional theatre. Supported by the David Fraser Award, the scheme also helps to forge links for those who wish to 'cross over' and transfer their skills to television.

Michael Grade, Executive Chairman of ITV, said, "ITV has a long and proud history in drama and supporting this scheme is an exciting and worthwhile way to uphold that tradition. As a company we strive to nurture talent across the board and this is an excellent opportunity for us to do just that outside of our core business."

The ITV Theatre Director Scheme 2007 has already awarded bursaries to Joe Douglas who is at the National Theatre of Scotland, Kathryn Ind at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Chris Hayden about to train at Salisbury Playhouse. The bursaries have been provided by the Mackintosh Foundation, ITV plc and the Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation. Each recipient will receive a bursary of £12,000 to fund a year long placement at a regional theatre. The directors will have the opportunity to assist on shows and work on a variety of projects in all departments of the theatre, developing their skills and producing new work.

Previous bursary holders include Trevor Nunn, Ken Loach, Michael Boyd, Roger Michell, Vicky Featherstone, Nicholas Kent and Dominic Hill.
